  • 7th St Entry, Alabama, First Avenue, Garage DOr Records, live recordings, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Molly Maher, Tuscaloosa

This is about Marlee MacLeod, an amazing talent from Alabama who migrated to Minneapolis, MN for a spell between 1996 – 2000. What follows are a handful of live recordings which Marlee has graciously allowed me to share on Live Music Archive with other past, present and future fans.

Marlee Macleod

This remains my favorite of the four times I had the opportunity to record Marlee, and I would go so far as to say it’s also one of my most cherished recordings out of the countless bands I recorded over the years. I believe this was the first time I had the opportunity to see Marlee perform, as well as the first time I recorded one of her sets, and I feel fortunate indeed to have been able to preserve such a stunning performance. Exquisitely crafted songs demonstrating a penchant for clever heartfelt lyrics and a confident stride, yet I was completely unprepared for the rich vocal nuances Marlee displayed on this particular evening – easily one of the most emotionally captivating singers I’ve seen in ages. Listening back to this nearly thirty years later, I still feel swept over by the same powerful waves of emotion as I did standing in the 7th St Entry that night. Need I say this feels like a perfect live album? Okay, I reckon I just said it already.

Marlle MacLeod – There We Are CD release show
Molly Maher

A brilliant performance by Marlee, performing with a full band, to promote her new album, There We Are. Molly Maher pulled double-duty that evening, opening with a set of her own material, then accompanying Marlee on bass and backing vocals. Tina Schlieske also made a special appearance in a duet performance of Nobody To Me, which she had previously covered on her 1998 album, It’s All Just The Same. All of which amounted to a valiant effort indeed, to hold back the incessant beat of disco creeping in from the dance night next door at First Avenue.
