Finally, I got the chance to see Quasi. I don’t how it’s worked out all these years that timing / schedules / whatever somewhat didn’t allow that opportunity before, especially since I have seen both members a couple time each in other bands (Sam in Deep Fried Boogie Band, and Janet in Sleater-Kinney), but as far as I’m concerned, this made up for it. The funny thing is that when I heard about this tour, the show in Portland was already sold out, but someone had the foresight to book a second (all-ages) show the following day, and I was able to get tickets before that one sold out as well.

This was literally the first show I’ve attended since Feb 2020, just before the whole world got put on hold, so I was a little out of the loop regarding various protocols, and didn’t have all my ducks in a row – I never heard back from anyone regarding open taping, or what the order of the bands would be (I would have loved to record Sea Moss, but arrived too late). When I walked in the room, Quasi were just ending their first song, so I switched on the recorder, and then spent a minute or two finding a clear spot to record from. Interestingly, the best spot at that point ended up being right next to the Quasi merch booth, where I set my Tascam right on the ledge – not stealthy by any stretch, but no one seemed to have any problem with that. All this to say that with minimal effort, I somehow managed to capture a decent sounding recording of the set overall, I think.

Not counting their 1993 Self-Titled cassette debut, Quasi delivered a pretty good representation of just about every one of their albums between then and now, with the exception of Hot Shit! (2003) or American Gong (2010), and even threw in a Breeders cover for good measure. Like everyone these days, I opted to use my iPhone to make a video clip of a couple of songs, but that’s not included in this fileset. I hope some other fans dig this, and if you haven’t seen them yet, and have the chance, just go! Believe me when I say they are way more visually engaging on stage then a mere audio recording can possibly do justice to, so see them if you can, and pick up the new LP, which is as solid an entry in their discography as anything they’ve ever done.
